A Year with Charles Dickens: A 52-Week Cultural Learning Journey Through Literature, Society & Story

Product Description

Spend a year exploring Charles Dickens through 52 carefully structured encounters with literature, Victorian culture, social institutions, cities, objects, journalism, performance and public life.

From childhood in Chatham, the blacking warehouse and parliamentary reporting to Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Bleak House, Great Expectations and the unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood, this cultural learning experience follows Dickens as both writer and observer of a rapidly changing nineteenth-century world.

Rather than treating the novels as isolated classics, the journal places them alongside the streets, prisons, workhouses, railways, courts, newspapers, theatres and social arguments that surrounded their creation.

Across 52 weekly experiences, the journey unfolds through four distinct sections:

Section I — Learning to Read and Perform the City

Explore Chatham, the blacking warehouse, the Marshalsea, shorthand, parliamentary reporting, Doctors’ Commons, Sketches by Boz, The Pickwick Papers, Doughty Street, Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. Discover how observation, work, journalism, institutions and performance helped Dickens develop the techniques through which he would make the modern city legible to millions of readers.

Section II — Fame Tests the Social Imagination

Follow Dickens through The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, America, slavery, Martin Chuzzlewit, A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, Italy, Dombey and Son, Urania Cottage and David Copperfield. As his fame expands, the journal examines both the extraordinary reach of his social imagination and the contradictions within it.

Section III — The Machinery of Respectability

Enter the mature Dickensian world through Household Words, Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, public readings and A Tale of Two Cities. Law, bureaucracy, industry, finance, education, race, family and respectability become interconnected systems whose effects can be traced through bodies, rooms, money and everyday routines.

Section IV — Writing, Performing & Leaving the Work Unfinished

Explore All the Year Round, Great Expectations, night walking, Gad’s Hill, Our Mutual Friend, Dickens’s correspondence with Eliza Davis, the Staplehurst railway accident, the American reading tours, Sikes and Nancy and the unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The final weeks examine what happens when authorship becomes public performance — and what readers inherit when the final story remains incomplete.

Each week begins with a Weekly Anchor, Featured Focus and Primary Encounter, followed by a substantial contextual and reflective essay, guided attention prompts, reflection questions and a dedicated fillable Journal Notes page.

The experience deliberately separates documentary evidence, fiction, memoir and later interpretation, while confronting difficult subjects including poverty, slavery, race, antisemitism, empire, gender and political violence within their historical and literary contexts.
